Colorado’s Only Lesbian Bar Closes Its Doors
After over a decade serving the LGBTQ community in Denver, Blush & Blu, Colorado’s only lesbian bar, held its final party on Saturday night. This closure marks the end of an era for many who found solace and belonging within its walls.
A Farewell to a Beloved Space
On September 28, owner Jody Bouffard shared a heartfelt farewell note. She expressed gratitude to the “promoters, performers, DJs, drag queens, drag kings, comedians, poets, and artists” who brought life to Blush & Blu. Bouffard described them as the bar’s “lifeblood,” emphasizing their role in creating a vibrant and welcoming atmosphere.
“You’ve filled this space with color, magic, and joy,” she wrote.
Impact on the Community
Michelle Osterday, known as “MadameO,” performed many burlesque shows at Blush & Blu. She expressed her sadness at the closure, noting the great atmosphere and sense of ease the bar provided.
Bouffard also thanked the patrons, acknowledging that the bar thrived because of their support. She hoped that everyone would carry the memories and community spirit of Blush & Blu in their hearts.
Memories and Anecdotes
Supporters flooded social media with well-wishes and cherished memories. Brittany Bartges, a 38-year-old Denver resident, shared her appreciation for the space. She reflected on her journey of self-acceptance after serving in the military under the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy.
Bartges described Blush & Blu as an oasis where she felt valid and accepted. “In the military, being with a woman was illegal. Blush was a place to feel like a valid human,” she stated.
She fondly recalled special moments at the bar, from first dates to watching drag performances with her mom. “In a lesbian bar, we are at home. We can take up as much space as we want,” she explained.
A Changing Landscape for Lesbian Bars
Blush & Blu’s closure highlights a broader trend. In 2020, there were fewer than 20 lesbian bars across the United States. However, a post-pandemic “lesbian bar renaissance” has emerged, leading to new establishments opening in various states. Most recently, Dani’s Queer Bar launched in Boston last month.
The Lesbian Bar Project tracks lesbian bars, reporting about 30 still operating across the country. Sadly, the loss of Blush & Blu reduces that number, leaving many in the community searching for new spaces to gather.
Controversies and Challenges
In recent years, Blush & Blu faced scrutiny for alleged issues, including unfair employee compensation and claims of a hostile work environment. In 2021, three former employees sued the bar for mistreatment and underpayment. However, all claims were dismissed in 2023, as reported in court documents.
Blush & Blu opened its doors on Colfax Avenue in downtown Denver in 2012. As it closes, the community reflects on the memories and connections made in this cherished space, which will be sorely missed
