Courage Under Fire: How Moscow’s Gay Clubs Stand Strong After Raids
Moscow Gay Clubs Raid: Police detained over 50 individuals in two separate gay clubs in Moscow during overnight raids, according to reports from pro-Russian Telegram channels MSK1 and SHOT.
Moscow Gay Clubs Raid: Details of the Police Operation
One raid occurred at the Central Station club in downtown Moscow. Police claimed the operation aimed to combat drug trafficking. Videos from the club show officers forcing patrons to lie on the ground and frisking them violently. At the time of the raid, about 200 people attended an event celebrating National Coming Out Day, which occurs annually on October 11.
Another Moscow Gay Clubs Raid: Three Monkeys Targeted
Police also targeted Three Monkeys, another popular queer venue in Moscow. Reports do not clarify the location where the detained individuals were taken. According to SHOT, the raids followed complaints from local residents about the venues. Allegedly, residents reported Three Monkeys for inappropriate behavior, including scantily clad performers and public displays of affection.
Possible Shutdown of Moscow Gay Clubs After Raid
Another report from Mash suggests that the venues could face closure for “discrediting the Russian army.” This accusation stems from a performance at Central Station where drag queens reportedly mocked Russia’s military actions in Ukraine.

Background of the Moscow Gay Clubs Raid
Central Station and Three Monkeys are among the most frequented queer venues in Moscow. Following the introduction of anti-LGBT laws in 2014, Central Station temporarily closed after a series of violent incidents, including a shooting and gas attacks. Since late 2023, the Kremlin has intensified its crackdown on the LGBTQ+ community, labeling the “international LGBT movement” as extremist. In this context, Central Station’s St. Petersburg location has already been forced to shut down.
