LGBTQ+ Online Directory “Ask Bobby” Launched in Honour of Late Strictly Star Robin Windsor
A new LGBTQ+ online directory, Ask Bobby, has been launched in memory of professional dancer and beloved Strictly Come Dancing star Robin Windsor, affectionately known as “Bobby.” The platform, which went live in June, aims to be a one-stop resource for mental health charities, community groups, sports clubs, and support services tailored to the LGBTQ+ community in the UK.
Honouring a Legacy of Visibility and Compassion
Best known for his role on Strictly from 2010 to 2013 and for participating in the show’s first-ever same-sex dance pairing, Robin Windsor was a vibrant advocate for mental health and LGBTQ+ visibility. His partner and close friend, Davide Cini, collaborated with the charity You Are Loved to create Ask Bobby as a lasting tribute to Windsor’s passion for supporting others.
A “One-Stop Shop” for Support
Ask Bobby offers a searchable directory where users can find vetted LGBTQ+‑friendly organisations across categories like mental health, social groups, sports, and more. It’s designed to combat isolation and loneliness by connecting people with the communities and support networks they need.
Support for the project highlights the urgent need: queer individuals are statistically more likely to experience loneliness and mental health struggles, including suicide and substance misuse.
A Cherished Inaugural Event
The directory’s launch event took place at Betty & Joan’s in South London on June 19, drawing community members, advocates, and inspiration from Windsor’s life. Organiser Marc Svensson of You Are Loved emphasised that the directory’s mission is rooted in connection, “signposting people to their community… might be a really good way to combat loneliness and isolation”.
Reflections on Robin’s Legacy
Davide Cini shared emotional insights into why the platform carries Robin’s nickname:
“Helping others, including children and those with disabilities, to dance helped Robin during some of his darkest days. I think it’s the legacy that myself, Robin’s family and friends would like for him, so he can keep shining a light and help people within our community who are struggling”.
Live Now, and Growing
Ask Bobby is now live and open for searches and submissions from LGBTQ+‑serving organisations. The platform invites any inclusive mental health, community, or sports groups to apply for inclusion and join in extending Windsor’s legacy of love, support, and connection.
